UK Dairy Product Production

  • Provisional production data from Defra showed that 545 thousand tonnes of liquid milk were produced in July 2016, approximately 23 thousand tonnes (4.0%) less than July 2015.
  • Cumulatively, liquid milk production for the 12 months ending July 2016 was 157 thousand tonnes lower compared with the same period ending July 2015, at 6,780 thousand tonnes.
  • Butter production was down 17.6% in July 2016 compared with the previous year at 11 thousand tonnes. The cumulative production for the 12 months ending July 2016 was up by 14.4% compared with the same period the previous year.
  • Cheese production in July 2016 stood at 38 thousand tonnes, up marginally 0.6% on the year. On a cumulative basis, cheese production for the 12 months ending July 2016 reached 443 thousand tonnes, increasing on the same period last year by 4.6%.

Provisional cheese production figures for 2015 show that Cheddar production was up by 2.3% compared to the previous year at 293,604 tonnes.

Production of 'short life territorials' and 'other cheeses' were both down on the year by 30.0% and 4.6% respectively, but there was a 50.8% increase in long life territorials.

Total cheese production stood at 422,263 tonnes which was a 1.5% increase compared with the previous year. Please note figures are provisional and are likely to be retrospectively changed.
