UK Dairy Product Production

  • Provisional production data from Defra showed that 603 thousand tonnes of liquid milk were produced in November 2015, approximately 2 thousand tonnes (0.3%) more than November 2014.
  • Cumulatively, liquid milk production for the 12 months ending November 2015 was 64 thousand tonnes lower compared with the same period ending November 2014, at 7,037 thousand tonnes.
  • Butter production was up 15.8% in November 2015 compared with the previous year at 2 thousand tonnes. The cumulative production for the 12 months ending November 2015 was down by 8.5% compared with the same period the previous year.
  • Cheese production in November 2015 stood at 30 thousand tonnes, up by 3.2% on the year. On a cumulative basis, cheese production for the 12 months ending November 2015 reached 417 thousand tonnes, increasing on the same period last year by 1.5%.

Provisional cheese production figures for 2014 show that Cheddar production was up by 15.6% compared to the previous year at 279,124 tonnes.

Production of 'other cheeses' has fallen by 10 thousand tonnes (10.0%) on the year.

Total cheese production stood at 411,939 tonnes which was a 6.2% increase compared with the previous year. It must be stressed however that these figures are provisional and are likely to be retrospectively changed.
