First Milk has reported it received around 100 million litres more milk than forecast from its members in the past twelve months, most of which went into powder production. The proportion of milk processed into SMP has risen to 19% in the past year, up from 4% only two years ago. The increased reliance on powders, where prices have seen the biggest falls over the past year, has meant the co-op has had more and more of its milk in the lowest value markets. This has limited its ability to pay similar milk prices to those putting a greater proportion of milk into higher priced markets.

First Milk have reported a trading loss of £12.1million for the six months to September 2014, leading to the actions they took in January (see here for more).
