New number one bulls for other dairy breeds
Published 6 December 11
British Friesian producers have a new number one sire with which to expand their breeding repertoire, in the shape of UK-tested Morcourt Hilton. Breaking through the £200 Profitable Lifetime Index barrier, this son of Tittenser Hylke combines impressive production figures with solid traits for fitness. No official type figures are available for this bull, although since his dam - Morcourt Tina 81 - has classified EX92 with an EX93 udder in her sixth lactation, they will be awaited with optimism and interest. His PLI is £214.
Also new into the top five of DairyCo's British Friesian PLI rankings is Lakemead Randolf, maternal brother to the popular Lakemead Rancher. Sired by Marshside Rocket 3 and out of Lakemead Rachel 13 EX91 from the well know Somerset herd of Mary Mead, his Lifespan Index at 0.6 is the highest in the Friesian breed. His PLI is £163.
Third placed Deangate Tarquin is another son of Hylke, who excels for daughter Fertility Index and has a PLI of £162.
The top three Jerseys reshuffle slightly to reveal a new number one this run in Danish-bred, DJ Broiler (PLI £204). Broiler transmits excellent daughter fertility (FI 6.1) alongside good fitness and type. High fat bull, Sunset Canyon Anthems Allstar remains in second place (PLI £195), with last time's number one, DJ Lix in third (PLI £188).
Finnish Ayrshire, Asmo Tosikko takes top honours in the Ayrshire rankings with a PLI of £191 and combines high production with good cell counts (SCC -23). In second is the Swedish Red, G Edbo and rounding off the top three is another Finnish bull, Kilpisalon Toivo who has the highest Lifespan Index of the top thee at 0.5.
Other breeds highlights are:
- · Drisgol Watzon, who maintains his strong lead in the Shorthorn rankings.
- · Sniders Option Aaron also retains number one position on Guernsey Genetic Merit.
- · Odislait is number one PLI Montbeliarde.
- · Prossli keeps his lead for the Brown Swiss breed with a very good Lifespan Index.
Comparison across breeds
"It's always worth a reminder that genetic indexes should not be compared across breeds," says Marco Winters, head of genetics for DairyCo.
"The figures for each breed are calculated to relate to that breed average, so it would not only be meaningless to compare figures across breeds, but could also be completely misleading.
"For those who want to compare one breed with another in considering cross-breeding options, DairyCo provides a conversion formula for this purpose."
