EU Commission to give milk to Syrian children

Published 5 April 16

The EU Commission has announced it will provide drinking milk to 350k Syrian children, in response to the crisis in the region. The €30m funding for the aid programme comes from the EU’s €500m farmer support package announced last year. The Commission says the money will be used to buy milk of EU origin, helping support its farmers.

It is worth putting the likely volumes into context. Depending on the daily volume of milk supplied to each child, AHDB estimates this could be equivalent to around 1% of the volume of milk currently being offered into intervention each day.
