EU ministers to discuss farm support but warn of limitations

An “emergency” Farm Council meeting of European ministers will take place on 7 September in Brussels to discuss short and medium term measures to support EU farmers.

Ahead of the meeting, EU Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan has cautioned there are limits to what the Commission can do to help. He suggested targeted measures for the worst-affected nations (e.g. the Baltic states) would be investigated and work to improve market access for EU exports would continue.

The Commissioner expressed his reluctance to increase intervention prices, stating that raising intervention could delay market adjustment.
