GB milk production stops falling for now

Published 17 August 18

After 11 consecutive weeks of declines, GB milk production stabilised w/e 11 August with a small 0.2% increase on the previous week. The recent wetter weather has started to support an improvement in grass growth as seen in the AHDB Forage for Knowledge results, and this in turn may have helped stop the decline in volumes for now. Milk production is still running 0.9%* below the same week last year, but 0.6% ahead of the AHDB milk production forecast.

Based on the weekly survey, AHDB estimate July 2018 milk production to have come out at 1,025m litres. This is 0.9% below July last year, but in line with the AHDB forecast.

Despite volumes stabilising this week, there continues to be concern over the impact of feed costs as we move towards the autumn

* AHDB estimate overall milk production from a weekly survey of the largest milk buyers covering approximately 75% of volumes in the country. The volumes are scaled up based on other available data, including the official Defra production statistics. The resultant overall production figure can vary from the official Defra production statistics, but in AHDB’s view is a fairer reflection of the actual volumes collected in the country.
