  • General inflation is leaving dairy behind14 December 2016
    The cost to consumers for milk and cheese at retail level has not kept up with general inflation since 2010. The general price level has been rising at a steady rate of about 3% per year. In comparison, retail prices for cheese have risen by just over 1% per year while fresh milk prices have fallen by 1.4% per year.
  • Continued growth in EU outlook for dairy14 December 2016
    Global milk production is expected to show moderate growth over the next decade according to the EU Commission’s latest Medium Term Outlook. This will be driven by continued increases in dairy consumption.
  • Irish milk production to continue on upward trajectory7 December 2016
    Irish milk production in 2017 is forecast to increase by 6% to more than 7bn litres, according to Teagasc’s (the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority) latest Outlook.

    The Global Dairy Trade (GDT) overall Price Index increased by 3.5% this week, its fourth consecutive increase.

  • The impact of Brexit on protected food names7 December 2016
    The latest in AHDB’s series of Horizon reports considers the impact that Brexit may have on the industry in terms of products of Geographical Indication (GI). The protection of geographical names designating agricultural products has existed for over 100 years and, currently, three schemes are available through the EU.
  • Calls for EU Milk Package to be extended6 December 2016
    The EU Commission has reported back on the Milk Package that was launched in October 2012 and is currently due to run until 2020. According to the report, the Milk Package has made a real difference to milk producers. However, the report calls for the package to be extended beyond 2020 in order for a deeper integration of producer organisations (POs).
  • Non-Holstein breeds see little change in position6 December 2016
    In contrast to the Holsteins, the genetic indexes for the other breeds remain remarkably stable, with little movement to report in the December run, published today (6 December) by AHDB Dairy.

    Jersey bulls maintain their lead in the ranking for Spring Calving Index (£SCI), published today by AHDB Dairy, reinforcing the breed’s suitability for producing high quality milk cost-effectively in grazing-based, spring calving systems.

    A father and son are the top two Holstein bulls in the proven sire rankings for the first time in recent memory, according to new genetic index figures published today (6 December) by AHDB Dairy.
