Defra revise 2017 milk production figures

Published 5 January 18

Defra have revised their milk production figures for every month of 2017. This data, released 4 January 2018, gives January-October production figures that are all higher than had previously been reported, alongside the release of the November production figure.

The revisions bring the cumulative production for January-October 2017 to 12,315 million litres, up 332 million litres from the previously reported figure. The cumulative production for the 2017/18 season so far (April-November) is now 9,860 million litres.

While the adjustments are significant, the UK production figures for 2017 are now in line with AHDB's expectations. However, the May 2016 to December 2016 numbers still appear to be around 20m litres per month lower than we would have expected. As a result, we would advise caution when looking at year-on-year changes.

As a result of the Defra changes we have also seen revisions to the 2017 farmgate prices and composition data, however these are mostly marginal. The exception is that the October UK farmgate price has been revised up 0.18ppl, to 31.79ppl.
