Defra revisions push up end-of-year slaughter figures

Published 24 January 18

Defra’s latest release of cattle slaughter statistics included significant upwards revisions to August 2017 - November 2017 figures, alongside its December numbers. These revisions added just under 24,000 cows to the total for 2017, and the same again for heifers.

Between the revisions and December stats, Cow slaughterings for 2017 have totalled nearly 639,000 head, 3.5% below 2016*, while heifer slaughterings come to 729,000 head, 0.5% above 2016*. Heifer slaughterings in 2017 were the highest since 2011, and 2017 Cow slaughterings are the second highest of the last ten years, after 2016.

It should be noted that this data includes both dairy and beef animals.

* Please note that the 2016 figure runs from 27 December 2015 – 31 December 2016 because Defra used statistical months up to and including January 2016, before converting to calendar months from February 2016 onwards.
