New Dairy Knowledge Exchange Manager for AHDB

Steve WestSteve West has joined AHDB Dairy in its all year round (AYR) calving team as Knowledge Exchange Manager. 

The appointment follows the refocus of AHDB Dairy field based staff into AYR and block calving teams to support its ‘Optimal Dairy Systems’ initiative, which suggests farmers concentrate on one of the two *production systems. Steve’s role covers the central belt of England, which stretches from Norfolk to Cheshire.

Steve, based in South Warwickshire, joins the AHDB Dairy team from AHDB’s Beef and Lamb team where he had a similar farmer-facing role in knowledge exchange.  Prior to AHDB, Steve has been involved in business development for a milk recording company and ran a dairy contracting business and livestock enterprise in the South of England. He also worked in research science in genetics

In his new role Steve will work with AYR businesses to identify areas to help increase their competitiveness and will support AHDB’s Farm Excellence programme, working with AHDB Dairy’s Strategic Farms to demonstrate best practice and drive farmer-to-farmer learning .

“My career in genetics has highlighted to me the importance of breeding strategies in long term goals and my experience of milking cows and controlling lameness has given me insight into the immediate challenges dairy farmers are facing.”
