Arla stays 7th in Rabobank’s top 20 dairy companies

Acquisitions, currency and high prices have shifted the positions of the top 20 companies by dairy business turnover in the world, in the latest 2014 report by Rabobank.

Arla Foods has maintained its position at 7th in the table. Müller has slipped two places to 20th, however, this is before any potential takeover of Dairy Crest’s liquid division is taken into account.

There was a switch between second and third partly due to a vigorous acquisition programme for Lactalis, which allowed them to leap-frog Danone.

Dairy Farmers of America overtook FrieslandCampina to break into the top 5 as a result of high milk prices and its merger with Dairylea.

Japanese companies, Meiji and Morinaga, have suffered the largest falls in position (with the latter falling off the list) as domestic growth has been slow while a lack of investment overseas has restricted their market options.
