EU butter and SMP exports expected to grow

Published 27 July 15

EU exports of butter and skimmed milk powder (SMP) are expected to rise this year despite falls in global imports, according to USDA figures.

Reduced EU exports to large markets such as Russia and China are being offset by increases to other destinations, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt. As a result, butter exports are forecast to grow by 16,000 tonnes (11%) from last year and SMP by 64,000 tonnes (10%).

The figures suggest that the USDA believes the EU will be competitive in the butter and SMP markets over the year, while global trade falls. If the forecasts come to fruition this could help to ease build-up of stocks in the EU, depending on milk production developments.
