No increase in total cow slaughter numbers yet

UK slaughter numbers in the first six months of 2015 decreased by 1% to around 640,000 head compared to the same period last year, according to Defra statistics. Although the numbers include both beef and dairy cattle, they suggest dairy farmers have not yet started to respond to margin pressures by slaughtering more animals. However, as the winter approaches and dairy producers start to house cows, slaughter numbers may start to rise above last year’s levels.
