UK self-sufficiency levels

The EU Referendum vote has brought increased interest in the level of self-sufficiency* in the UK. Defra produce self-sufficiency levels for the main dairy products, which are shown in the chart below.

The UK produces more milk powder than is consumed, with 2015 production being more than double the level of consumption. However, for all the other main dairy products (with the exception of liquid milk) the UK does not currently produce enough product to satisfy the domestic market.

* self-sufficiency for individual products is the measure of UK production as a percentage of UK consumption
