Skimmed milk powder still best value for protein

Published 4 July 18

Despite rallying slightly in recent months, skimmed milk powder (SMP) continues to be a lower cost source of protein than whey powder.

Whey powder and SMP prices have historically shown a strong relationship because of their inter-changeability in certain applications. However, SMP has been consistently the lower cost option for protein for nearly 2 years.

The chart below plots the European Milk Market Observatory prices in euros per kg of protein. Both prices are shown as a range based on the typical protein content of the product; SMP (34%-36% protein) and whey powder (11%-14.5% protein).
