EU in trade talks with Mexico to improve exports

Published 19 June 15

The EU are in talks with Mexico to improve the current trade agreements that exist which will hopefully fill some of the gap left by the Russians in the market. Mexico has seen growth of 19% in cheese imports in the first three months of 2015 compared to 2014 up to around 30,000 tonnes, while the EU-28 share of this growth has risen from 4% to 12%.

The EU-28 has also seen growth in cheese markets in Japan, South Korea and the US. If developments continue and trade agreements progress, then the EU can be less reliant on the Russian market which typically accounts for around 30% of EU cheese exports.
