UK expands Cheddar exports

UK Cheddar exports increased significantly in the first half of 2015, up 55% compared to the same time last year. Although the EU is still the UK’s biggest customer, a rising proportion of Cheddar exports are going outside of the EU – almost a quarter so far this year. Shipments to Egypt, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and the US have all grown significantly.

This suggests UK Cheddar is competing successfully against product from other nations, despite a crowded cheese market as a result of oversupply, weak demand and the Russian import ban. However, prices have clearly suffered as a result and the increase in value terms is more modest at 21%, equivalent to around £17.8 million.
