In line with the broader trend in the retail grocery market, the hard discounters continue to make gains in their share of the GB cheese market. In the 52 weeks to 25 May 2014, the market share belonging to the hard discounters increased by 1.9 percentage points in volume terms and 1.3 percentage points by value when compared to last year. Although the Top 5 retailers’ market share by volume fell by 2.3 percentage points over the year, the impact on market share by value at these stores was mitigated by a 3.6% increase in the average selling price for cheese.

Price competition is stated as the key factor limiting total market growth as retailers continue to compete for market share. The growth of the discounters has already influenced low pricing strategies from many of the major retailers and this is expected to continue. According to The Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD), the discounters continue to appeal to a wide spectrum of shoppers and the proportion using a discounter as their main store has doubled over the past year, to 12%.
