More support for dairy farmers in the South Midlands

Published 28 April 09

Andy Dodd is the latest addition to DairyCo's team of extension officers and will be working in the south midlands area. Extension officers work directly with dairy farmers to help them improve their businesses and manage farms as profitably as possible.

Andy has over nine years of experience as a farm manager, including the last four years at a farm near Ledbury. He is delighted to be joining DairyCo and sees it as a great opportunity to share the knowledge he has gained at work and through his degree in Agriculture with land and farm management from Harper Adams. "I'm really enjoying it, it's great to be able to get out and work directly with dairy farmers so that I can help them put into practice what I've learnt, and to share the excellent information that DairyCo provides."

Stuart Goodinson, head of extension, says the team of extension officers provides a vital service for dairy farmers and is the most direct way for DairyCo to communicate with its levy payers. "DairyCo does a huge range of activities from research and development, through to providing market information and managing the image of dairy farming, our extension officers mean we can get the practical information and knowledge we have straight to farmers," he says.

Working alongside Piers Badnell, DairyCo's south west extension officer, Andy will be running dairy business groups - an opportunity for dairy farmers to discover the best ways to improve on-farm performance; he will also be arranging and taking part in open meetings, which are set up to give farmers the opportunity to pick up new techniques and see how best to apply them to their businesses. Other events that Andy will bring to the area will include feeding+, DairyCo's highly successful feeding programme, an event on cross breeding, and What If?, a short course designed to enable farmers to challenge existing systems and develop a clear strategy for the future.
