Russian dairy industry cheesed off over imitation cheese

Since the introduction of a ban on EU agricultural exports to Russia, the level of counterfeit production in Russia’s domestic market has doubled to 20%. According to Russia’s veterinary body, Rosselhoznadzor, this has occurred due to processors using alternative ingredients such as palm oil in the production of dairy products. In the same time period, Russian cheese production has increased significantly but milk deliveries remained stable.

As a result, Soyuzmoloko (the national union of dairy producers) has requested a quota to be placed on palm oil imports and to increase the penalties for supplying counterfeit material, which currently stands at $200.
