Published 8 August 19

GB dairy calvings in the first six months of 2019 saw a slight fall of 0.1% from the same period last year, according to the latest BCMS data. Total calvings for the six months were at 661k head, supported by strong March figures. However, the rises seen in Q1 this year were negated by a drop in the Q2 calf registrations

For the second quarter of this year, births to dairy dams totalled just under 298,000 head, a decrease of 2% from last year. The drop is not too surprising given the hot and dry conditions experienced last summer. Grass growth was significantly impacted from July through August, which combined with high temperatures, will have impacted conception rates.

Dairy births fell by 2.6%in both May and June, resulting in 5,000 fewer calf registrations across the two months than last year.
