Help for farmers to future proof their business

Published 14 June 17

Dairy farmers in the north of England are being encouraged to attend a series of meetings to help future proof their business in preparation for Brexit.

Jointly-run by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) and HSBC, the sessions have been set up to help producers manage market fluctuations while remaining profitable.

Recent market volatility makes running a profitable dairy business ever more challenging and understanding dairy market cycles and associated risks are becoming increasingly important.

These series of meetings will help farmers determine how they structure their business and manage their finances in order to improve business resilience and remain both competitive and sustainable over the long term.

Chris Gooderham, AHDB Dairy Lead Analyst will start by examining the UK, EU and Global Dairy Markets and how they could be affected by Brexit.

Chris said: “With under two years to prepare for Brexit and market volatility here to stay these meetings are a way we can help farmers plan for the future in a post-Brexit world.”

Next, one of HSBC’s Regional Agricultural Directors will explain the importance of understanding costs including short-term cash flow management and medium and long term planning for profitability.

Gordan Whitford, HSBC Regional Agricultural Director, said: ‘All dairy farmers need to understand their own costs of production in order that they can fully assess the impact of volatility within the dairy industry on their future business plans.’

Details of the meetings can be found below and at ahdb.org.uk. To book a place, farmers should contact the AHDB Dairy KE Events hub on 01904 771216 or email ke.events@ahdb.org.uk.
