Join us at Houghton Lodge where we will review the herd’s replacement options to achieve the maximum return and share the farm’s key physical and financial performance figures.
The day will involve two parts:
- Ian Browne from The Farm Consultancy group has been working with Houghton Lodge to evaluate which herd replacement policy would achieve the maximum return on the available land base.
- Ian will look at the strengths, weaknesses and economic viability of buying replacements, contract rearing or own rearing to ensure maximum return is achieved.
- We will also review the current technical and financial performance against AHDB’s optimal dairy systems defined KPI’s for block calving herds
Strategic dairy farms are a key part of our optimal dairy systems programme to demonstrate best practice, encourage farmer to farmer learning and aid benchmarking by sharing key physical and financial performance data.

About Strategic Dairy Farms
Strategic dairy farms help farmers learn from each other through regular on-farm meetings where we will share key performance data and showcase what the best farmers are doing.
They form part of the Optimal Dairy Systems programme which aims to help dairy farmers lower costs and increase efficiency by focusing on either a block or all year round calving system.
The growing network of strategic dairy farms have calculated key performance indicators (KPI’s) for their enterprises which are shared at meetings and published online. These are physical and financial performance measures that are critical to success. Farmers can benchmark their businesses against these KPI’s and identify areas for improvement.
About Houghton Lodge Farm
Houghton Lodge Farm was launched as a strategic dairy farm in April 2017 and currently operates a split block calving system.
Run by Evolution Farming in a joint venture with Farmcare Limited and financed with £1 million of seed capital, the project has brought life back to a redundant dairy unit at Houghton Lodge Farm.
The money has allowed investment in farm infrastructure including, reseeding the ground previously laid to arable and 20,000 sleepers for cow tracks.
The 585 cow cross-bred herd was funded separately by Evolution Farming through external investors which includes some autumn calvers, due to this diverse selection of cows, two calving blocks has been necessary initially to help with cash flow and to get the business going. Long term the aim is to be spring block only.
The investors have a choice of two types of shares within Evolution Farming.
1.) Variable - Linked to the wider business performance; adding protection in low milk price years and rewards in investors in better business times.
2.) 5% fixed return paid on the cows over five years. After the five years the cows can be returned or sold with the money repaid or another five year agreement.
