First Milk has announced that it is exporting its Mull of Kintyre Cheddar to the US, in a deal with a Texan fine foods retailer. The quantities exported as part of this deal are undisclosed but the cheddar is marketed as a premium product, with the Scottish heritage of the product said to resonate with US consumers. It retails for $13.49/lb, the equivalent of around £18.84/kg. According to Kantar Worldpanel, over the past year the average retail price for extra mature Cheddar in GB was £7.10/kg. The co-operative states that added value export sales are a key part of its business strategy to deliver returns for its farmer owners in the long-term, but that they will have a limited impact on milk price in the short-term.
