US wholesale butter prices continued to increase in August, up 7% to $5,557/tonne, despite being significantly uncompetitive on the world market. Prices are 70% and 30% higher than Oceania and EU respectively while export buyer demand in general is relatively thin keeping exports low. However, the combination of strong domestic demand and low US butter stocks are placing upward pressure on prices in the US market (cumulative stocks are down 38% Jan-Jul 14 compared to the previous year). In the coming months, if global demand returns the likelihood is Oceania and EU will benefit due to more competitive prices.
