UK milk solids lag behind EU competition

Of the main milk producing nations of the EU, only France returns butterfat and protein averages lower than the UK.

From a butterfat perspective, the UK is on a par with the average returned from Ireland, Germany and the whole of the EU-28, but is well behind the likes of the Netherlands and Denmark.

For protein, the UK fairs worse. Sitting behind the EU-28 by some margin, and significantly behind the other main milk producing nations, apart from France.

The lower compositional quality in the UK will be one of the key reasons why the average price paid to farmers often sits below other EU countries. The size of this impact will be considered next.
